SEM is the abbreviation, used in Romanian, of the English term Search Engine Marketing, meaning in translation marketing through search engines. SEM is a subcategory of online marketing that deals with changing the position of a site in the results (lists, hit list, SERPs – Search Engine Result Pages) of search engines and/or displaying paid ads that appear next to the results. SEO techniques belong to these SEM practices, but the two terms are still different. SEM can mean: Pay-Per-Click advertising, paid links, classic advertising (through banners, GIF images, animations, etc.).

SEM is mainly based on the creation of links to sites (link building), the display of paid ads on searches or on content (CPC / PPC , CPM or CPA). They are mainly paid methods of promotion, their purpose being that, depending on the available budget, sites are displayed first or as high as possible in the list for certain keyword searches.

SEO (search engine optimization) is a process of improving (favoring) the visibility of web pages within the search engine ranking of search results. “Search Engine Optimization” (SEO – in Romanian meaning optimization for search engines) is a subcategory of SEM online marketing, a practice that appeared in 1990, with the appearance of the first websites on the Internet and which represents the totality of techniques through which a website is brought to a form where it is propelled higher in the list of results given by a search engine for various keywords. Over time, optimizing a web page of a site has become a service offered by some companies.
